Door County lies on the Door Peninsula in eastern Wisconsin between Green Bay (yep, Go Packers) and Lake Michigan. It has farms, forests, lighthouses, and rocky coastlines. It is the perfect combination of Caribbean beauty, Martha’s Vineyard charm, and midwestern food and hospitality.
We had soo many recommendations from friends on where to go and what to do that it was hard to choose.
One of the top ones, was to partake in a fish boil, and the White Gull Inn was at the top of the list. We didn’t know much about these but learned during the show that fish boils started as a way to provide a hot meal to workers in the harsh cold fall and winter days. Workers complained that the potatoes and fish were too “fishy” tasting so kerosene was added to the fire at the end of the boil to burn off the fish oils from the top of the boil. It makes for quite a show!

One of the other recommendations was to go to Al Johnsons Scandinavian restaurant and experience the goats on the roof. It’s quite the experience and the cheese curds and beer were the perfect follow up to our kayak tour, you’ll see more on that later.

We didn’t get to play golf at Peninsula State Park, but we did get to take a bike ride on the Sunset Trail which loops through the park. The trail alternates between the woods and the shoreline of Lake Michigan. What a fun, and picturesque ride!

We originally signed up for a deep see cave and bluff tour but we got the call the morning of saying the water was too rough so we opted for the shipwrecks kayak tour off Bailey’s Harbor. It was overcast that morning, which made viewing the wrecks through our clear bottom kayaks difficult. Luckily Jim brought is Go Pro which he put face down on the bottom of the kayak and caught some great images and video of the shipwrecks.

Along the way we found time for a few dive bars, wineries, and of course breweries.

We loved everything about our trip to Door County and there are still soo many recommendations that we didn’t get to during our time, that a return trip will be in our future. Who’s in?
