Wisconsin Dells, often referred to as the “Waterpark Capital of the World”, is a city in south-central Wisconsin. It is a popular vacation spot for families and individuals who want to enjoy the outdoors and water parks. The city takes its name from the Dells of the Wisconsin River, a scenic, glacial-formed gorge that features sandstone formations along the banks of the Wisconsin River.
So, did we visit one of the many water parks…uh, no!
We stayed at Mirror Lake State Park which has all the water activities one would expect of a campground on a lake but we didn’t partake in any of those either. So what did we do?
We went to the cheese market of course! We stocked up with curds (squeaky of course), aged cheeses, and sausages. Some of these might survive the rest of our journeys to be shared with friends back in Arizona. I’d say the odds are 50/50. It’s all soo good!

We followed that up with a boat tour of the Upper Dells. The tour travels the Wisconsin River above the dam in Wisconsin Dells. You’ll cruise a channel cut by ancient glaciers, passing under pine-crowned cliffs, through the Narrows and past iconic sandstone formations. Making two shore landings: Witches Gulch — similar to Antelope Canyon as it’s in a sandstone canyon carved by water only it’s in a forest setting, and Stand Rock — a towering pillar of sandstone that’s home to the famous dog leap to the top of the tall rock.

The following day we spent playing games, and snacking on all the loot from the cheese market before heading to the Ishnala Supper Club for dinner. This was another Must Do recommendation from friends and didn’t disappoint. Supper Clubs, for those not familiar are combination restaurant and social club. It’s more of an experience than anything. You get there early as you’ll have 90 minutes or more before being seated for dinner. Not to fear however as the grounds are on the hills of Mirror Lake and there is 3-4 bars around that are more than happy to make you one of their famous brandy old fashions. We were even greeted by the owner on the way in. Dinner was equally great as we shared the aged ribeye with twin lobster tails. Yeap, this place lived up to the billing!

Next up, a short stay in Minnesota.
